biography

Aged 12, I was initiated to close-up magic by Sean Masterson, a pro magician working in Chicago.  That week-long intensive course inspired me to further pursue my interest in magic.

Like many magicians, I started performing for friends and family, and later graduated to 'strangers', first in nursing homes (a tough crowd, surprisingly!), then children's parties and eventually in restaurants and private functions.  Two years ago, I became the hospital magician at Charing Cross hospital in London, performing once a week to patients, trying my best to lift their spirits in what is often a difficult time.  It's been a truly fascinating and rewarding experience, both as a magician (the circumstances are particular!) and as a person.

Recently, my experience as a restaurant magician, coupled with my interest in ethics, led me to write a series of articles on the ethics of close-up magic for the magic magazine, Visions.

Close-up magic is, in my view, one of the richest, most diverse arts.  I learn something new each time I perform and each time I see others perform.  Fellow magicians at the Zodiac Magical Society, of which I am a member, have also enlightened me on various aspects of magic.  My goal is to constantly improve, both in my technique and my understanding of the art, to perform to the very best of my ability.
