Biography

I am a medical ethicist at St George's Hospital Medical School, University of London.

As well as teaching medical students, I am Director of Imperial College's Applied Clinical Ethics course, and an editor of a number of journals (Postgraduate Medical Journal, BMC Medical Ethics, and Journal of Hospital Ethics).

My research interests include the doctor-patient relationship, truth-telling in medicine, surgical ethics, disaster medicine, medical education, publication ethics, and the ethics of end-of-life care.

I am a columnist for the British Medical Journal ('Ethics Man', every six weeks) and a regular contributor to the BBC.

I also give talks on medical ethics both in the UK and abroad and publish in academic and popular outlets (some of my articles are available online).  I sit on various committees, including the Ministry of Defence's Research Ethics Committee, the St George's and Imperial NHS Trust Clinical Ethics Committees and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Hobbies include magic, chess, most sports, French literature, and playing the piano.

Please feel free to contact me about any of the above.
