I
am a medical ethicist at St George's Hospital Medical School,
University of London.
As
well as teaching medical students, I am Director of Imperial College's Applied
Clinical Ethics course,and an editor of a number of journals
(Postgraduate Medical Journal, BMC
Medical Ethics, and Journal
of Hospital Ethics).
My
research interests include the doctor-patient relationship, truth-telling
in medicine, surgical ethics, disaster medicine, medical education,
publication ethics, and the ethics of end-of-life care.
I
am a columnist for the British Medical Journal ('Ethics Man', every six weeks) and a regular contributor
to the BBC.
I
also give talks on medical ethics
both in the UK and abroad and publish in academic and popular
outlets (some of my articles are available online). I
sit on various committees, including the Ministry of Defence's
Research Ethics Committee, the St George's and Imperial NHS Trust
Clinical Ethics Committees and the Committee on Publication Ethics
(COPE).
Hobbies
include magic, chess, most sports, French
literature, and playing the piano.
